The Austin Allegro Increases In Value More Than A Ferrari. About Time

At last, the time of the ordinary car like the Ausin Allegro has come and it has increased in value more than a Ferrari 308.

They have even grown more than the Jaguar E-Type, the latest data from the Hagerty Price Guide shows that those ordinary cars have seen gains over the year up to as much as 20 per cent.

Hagerty’s Price Guide tracks up to 2,200 cars in its price guide to give owners of prospective buyers an accurate picture of those cars’ values. The latest guide has added 196 new entrants of which once were ordinary transport for many people. The guide takes their average value in 2020 to their average in 2021 to date.

Those models include the Ford Cortina, Renault 4, Hillman Imp, Austin Princess, and of course the Austin Allegro have had the biggest increases in value so far this year., Gaining between 4.4 and 20.4 per cent for the top 10. Certainly, better than a savings account in a bank which pays less than 1 per cent. Ownership and running costs excluded of course, but those increases can offset those completely and exceed them in some cases.

Many other decent performances are put in by old household names like the Ford Fiesta, Austin Metro and Vauxhall Cavalier. Each of which has attained classic status and have become desirable to own.

Cars held in high regard like the Jaguar E-Type Series III have risen by 8.2 per cent from an average of £54,988 and the Ferrari 308 GTB has gone up from 61,200 to £65,475 representing a gain of 7 per cent. A Triumph Spitfire will have gained 4.5 per cent too according to the guide.

If you want to see examples of the cars in the list below then Hagerty’s Festival of the Unexceptional. A concours event for the once ordinary car. Representing those vehicles that were mostly unloved for years and scrapped when discarded that have as a result become extremely rare. This year the festival is being held at Grimsthorpe Manor, Lincolnshire, on 31 July. Click here to find out more

Rarity doesn’t always equal high prices, the majority in the list can be bought for £4,000 in decent condition.

John Mayhead, head of automotive intelligence for Hagerty, says there is a simple reason seemingly ordinary cars are becoming more sought-after by Britain’s car enthusiasts. “These everyday cars are becoming increasingly rare. For decades the vast majority were unloved workhorses that would eventually be sold for scrap at best. Now, with rarity on their side and nostalgia tugging at the heartstrings, enthusiasts are snapping up the remaining examples, sometimes because of an emotional connection and sometimes perhaps because they feel a duty to preserve them for the enjoyment of future generations.”
