1965 VW Beetle 1500 Towel Rail Bumper For Sale £9,000
The Car & Its History
This nice VW Beetle is the more desirable 1500 model and is a recent South African import. Being an earlier 1500 it is the rarer car with the separate fuel guage in the dash and the large ‘Towel Rail’ style bumpers.
Volkswagen produced the Beetle nearly everywhere and South Africa was one of the production locations. Sent over seas as complete knock down kits, they were assembled in local plants supplying that particular region.
The NOVA paperwork is done and the car will be heading through the MOT to assure any buyer of its condition.
Sadly there is no paperwork to accompany the car.
Exterior
Presented in a Black and Cream two tone colour scheme with complementary whitewall tyres.
Having lived in South Africa all its life the car is largely rust free. Although the car has been restored at some point there are no signs of major work underneath, the climate reducing the need for welding. The colour is not likely to be original due to the strong sun.
There are some marks, dings and areas of paint to attend to, but it looks smart.
The ‘Towel Rail’ bumpers are complete with some rechoming needed, but otherwise good.
The reat of the chrome looking good and suiting the car really well.

Museum Visits
Interior
The interior is smart and all there, not that there is too much inside.
Only the two instruments, the speedometer, which is unusually in mph and the separate fuel gauge.
The basic interior in its two tone colours going well with the exterior and is quite bright and airy.
Engine & Running Gear
The 1500 was new for 1965 for the 1966 model year and this is one of the earliest cars.
The additional power and the 78 mph top speed making this a much more useful A road proposition than a 1200. Fourth gear is much taller than the earlier car too.
With 1493 cc and apparently 53 bhp it goes well and keeps up with traffic fine.
