California Based Singer Has Completed Its 300th Restoration, The Sotto
Restomodders Singer have produced their 300th 911 already and it’s another
964 based conversion called the Sotto. It’s almost hard to believe it was a
964, though they really had the last of the original 911 shape, with the more upright
windscreen belaying its Beetle roots. But are theses really better and worth
all the money? Well yes, of course they are, and they are more of a classic
than a 964, though I do like those anyway.
This is a highly personalised car, restored in conjuntion with the car’s owner who had a hand in the overall style and design of the car and it looks fantastic.
You’d be hard pushed to find the 1990 964 hiding in there, it really could be an earlier car, but that’s the point. The 911 did start off as a Targa but the bodywork is now carbon fibre finished in the rather nice shade of Resistance Blue.
The interior was retrimmed in a contrasting Orange leather which looks better than it sounds. The seats are lightweight toom with carbon fibre backs.
The engine is a 4.0 litre naturally aspirated unit with a manual 5 speed transmission.
The use of carbon also extends the brakes, well they’re carbon ceramics and titanium was used to make the exhaust.
No Singer is ever cheap, this one is likely to have been no exception and would have had hundreds of hours spent on the restoration.
The cars are one thing, but what is really incredible is how Singer have grown to over 600 employees since 2009 and have complete 300 911s.
I know they’re expensive, but there still seems to be good demand for them and it’s likely to continue. I wonder if Singer will start to bring some of the newer cars through the process, some of the more unlikely ones. I like what they do and hope they continue, but I also hope they don’t do too many, leave some 964s as they are…. I’d quite like one.
