Singer Reimagine The First Porsche 911 Turbo In New Study
The original Porsche 911 Turbo has received the Singer reimagination treatment in a new study. Singer’s Third Act follows on from the Classic Study and Dynamics and Lightweight Study in Continued Celebration of the Porsche 911. Restomod to everyone else, but that may be underselling what Singer have achieved.
The first turbocharged road car form Porsche that has received the Singer treatment looks, initially, pretty standard. But with all the best of these projects, it’s in the details.
The Turbo study is the result of multiple requests from owners for restoration services that incorporate turbocharging. Over 70 owners have reserved bespoke restorations so far. This will include collaborating with owners on the first restorations to develop performance and driving characteristics.
Rob Dickinson, Founder and Executive Chairman, Singer Group Inc reminisces on his first encounter with a Turbo.
“My first ever ride in a Porsche 911 as an 11-year-old in 1976 left me dry-mouthed and speechless – it was a black 930 Turbo with red tartan seats. Forty-five years on from that life-changing moment I’m excited to present the results of our study that aims to capture the awesome thrill of Porsche’s first ‘supercar’ while reimagining its performance and refinement and collaborating with owners to take both to new heights. I believe it’s a fitting tribute to a car that changed my life and many others.”
The first Singer 911 turbo finished in Wolf Blue has a specification that reflects the owner’s personal vision but gives a clue as to what will come later.
The focus on high performance combined with grand touring capabilities includes:
• Lightweight carbon fibre bodywork in Wolf Blue
• 3.8L twin turbocharged, intercooled flat-six
• Over 450 HP
• 6-speed manual transmission
• Rear-wheel-drive and touring-focused suspension
• Carbon-ceramic braking system
• Interior presented in Malibu Sand with Black Forest wood accents
• Electrically adjustable, heated seats
• Air-conditioning
Engine
Like all Singer restorations, the Turbo features a 964 generation of air cooled flat six as a starting point. This car has the new evolution of the Mezger engine which is now in 3.8 litre form. Twin turbochargers sit either side, each with an electric wastegate.
Inside the intake plenums are bespoke air to water intercoolers. the rear fender shark fin has been reimagined as an air intake and draws cold air into the engine bay to help with cooling and engine performance. This arrangement allows power output to start at 450 hp.
Materials
Using carbon fibre in the body allows for mass reduction and increased stiffness, inspired by the race cars of the 1970s. The overall aesthetics are retained whilst tweaks are to optimise for increased performance.
By lightening the body, singer have increased the responsiveness and improved the dynamics and capabilities of the 911 Turbo.
Driving
Singer have been optimising their cars drivability and usability and the Turbo has drawn on the first AWD development Classic Study in 2014 meaning you can have your Turbo in rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration.
The choice of sure footed handling or the original sportiness of RWD providing a more classic experience means you may want to try both. In both cases an optimized six speed manual gearbox is used.
Performance
Forced induction has been around a long time and is a tried and proven method for producing big power outputs. The starting point of 450 hp is for the standard 964 engine build. But now the power has reached up to 510 hp.
Further refinements are made to the cabin and especially in noise reduction and ride improvements with the suspension and damping allowing owners to use the cars on long distance touring.
The turbocharging allows for the delivery of low down torque with the ability to pass other vehicles with little effort. Of course, higher outputs can be specified by each owner as desired.
A sports exhaust system can be specified, and the suspension damping can be further tuned to the individual owners desired use.
Larger more powerful brakes are fitted behind the bigger wheels along with other more modern features such as ABS and traction control. Carbon ceramic discs can be specified too if desired.
The interior focusses on all season touring, heated electrically adjustable leather seats. Cruise control is fitted for those long high speed autobahn runs.
It’s one of those, if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it type of cars. Seeing as restoration would be expensive anyway the Singer route might work out cost effective. But it’s nice to see that the car still looks and likely feels enough of a classic 911.
