Only Fools And Horses, Boycie’s E-Type Jag That Del Boy ‘Smashed Up’
This E-Type Jag is one of the mist famous from British television, being Boycie’s from the Only Fools and Horses episode Go West Young Man, where Del Boy is sort of responsible for it being ‘smashed up’…
The car in question is a Series 3 Roadster that in only the second episode of the very first series of what must be one of Britain’s best ever comedies.
Now the star of a recent auction by Hampsons, the car sold for £102,375, including buyer’s premium against an estimate of £140,000 – 160,000.
Sold at the last of the auction house’ sale of 2022 at Mavericks in Holywell, North Wales, the car attracted a great deal of interest. The BBC TV appearance of course helped, where UYP 694M was ‘borrowed’ by Del and Rodney for a night out in the West End. Of course, it was crashed by the hapless duo, but the car never actually received any damage, it was a staged accident.
After filming the car has led something of a quiet life. First registered in 1973, the UK model is finished in Old English White and is trimmed in blue leather and comes with period correct wire wheels. Showing only 80,075 miles from new, the car appears to have been treated well and the engine and automatic transmission are described in good working order, while the condition of the body and trim is rather nice.
Helping that final auction price is a wealth of TV memorabilia, several videos, signed photographs and a scale model signed by Del Boy himself, Sir David Jason, and of course the underside of the boot lid is autographed by Boycie, the late John Challis.
I often wonder what the values of such cars will be as the memories fade of those TV series that many of us remember fondly. The best time to sell the car is probably now. A nice E-Type is worth decent money and that fantastic television connection too.
Is it expensive, yes. Will it lose money, maybe. If I had the funds, would I have bought it, absolutely.
