One Owner 1987 AE86 Toyota Corolla GT Sells For £46,250
A 1987 AE86 Toyota Corolla GT with one owner from new has sold on an online auction for a new record price of £46,250.
Car and Classic’s new online auction platform, which celebrated its first anniversary, sold the car beating the previous US record of $40,000, or £29,004 at the time of writing.
The AE86 Corolla GT has become quite a rare sight in the UK, especially one that is unmodified.
The car was bought new by the vendor after a relationship breakup, and she decided to cheer herself up. The car was ordered from Hallens Toyota in Cambridge without any extras, not that it needed any as it was generously equipped for the time, for £12,500. alloy wheels, sunroof and a radio cassette player.
Now with 97,000 miles on the clock the car has been well cared for and has a period Nokia phone holder, Toyota mudflaps and even the dealer registration plates.
For the first nine years the car was serviced at a Toyota dealer and received lots of car. So, when the insurance company tried to write off the car due to vandals keying the side of the car the owner bought the salvage and had it repaired to an as new standard.
The car was reluctantly sold after 34 years due to injury which makes the non-power steering difficult to use. The car had all the paperwork and even the original brochure used to choose the Wine Red colour.
“We talk a lot about survivor cars, but this is the true definition of one,” says Chris Pollitt, head of editorial at Car & Classic. “So many of these ended up as drift or track cars or just rotting away. Only the true adoration of this ‘86’ prevented the insurance company from obliterating it after incurring paint damage. The frantic bidding in the dying minutes confirmed the demand for a car that is now rightly cast as a legend in its homeland.”
Nicely coinciding with the first anniversary of the new online auction platform the record breaking sale was further proof of the success of Car & Classic’s online auctions.
“Our emphasis will continue to be on focussing on interesting and special cars and motorcycles,” adds Pollitt. “With escrow providing security to buyers and sellers alike and a hammer price that is what you actually pay, we are delighted to have sold over 1,500 cars over the past 12 months.”
