London Concours 2022 Goes Italian With Spiders

The 2022 London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, is going Italian with a collection of Spiders to be displayed on the lawns of the Honourable Artillery Club this summer.

Rare examples from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati will be the main draw for the sixth annual show, which runs from the 28th to the 30th of June and is in the heart of the city of London.

Alfa Romeo Duetto

Alfa Romeo’s finest will be celebrated at the event with a Duetto, officially the 1600 Spider, was Alfa’s affordable way to enter topless motoring in the 1960s.

The car was first shown to the public at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and was immediately a success. The delicate streamlined body, designed by Pininfarina, combined with the twin cam four cylinder engine attracted the attention of filmmakers with the car being chosen for the film The Graduate in 1967. Dustin Hoffman driving around enthusiastically probably helped with desirability too.

Ferrari 250 California

The selection of cars is done carefully and those that are chosen to represent the heyday of motoring glamour. The Ferrari 250 GT California is possibly the most glamourous spider of all.

Based on the 250 GT Pininfarina Coupe, the convertible was conceived by John van Neumann, Ferrari’s then representative on the West Coast of America to serve the demand for an open top car from his customers.

Scaglietti produced the car with a 3 litre V12 with one of the most elegant open top bodies. Only 106 were produced between 1957 and 1962, with the list of owners including Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood. Another one that featured in the movies in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Though thankfully they didn’t actually use one, a couple of nicely done replicas were abused instead.

Ferrari 275 GTS

The California’s successor in the grand lineage of Ferrari Spiders, the 275 GTS, will also appear at the event this June. First debuted at the 1964 Paris Salon, the GTS featured a shapely body designed by Pininfarina, and an enlarged 3.3 litre version of the Modena marque’s venerable Colombo V12, producing 260 horsepower. Just 200 of these graceful Ferraris were assembled between 1966 and ’68.

Maserati 3500 Vignale

Maserati produced some of the greatest cars of the 1960s and the 3500 Vignale Spider is just one of them. Stunning to look at and rare with only 242 ever built brings glamour from Modena to the event.

The 3500 drop top, a competitor to the 250 GT California, was produced by Vignale and hid a 3.5 litre six cylinder engine which was a detuned version of Maserati’s 350s racing car.

This collection of Spiders will be amongst the other cars at the show, which is really the ultimate garden party. As time moves closer to the show more cars will be announced.

Tickets are limited and on sale from just £35, head to the London Concours website for further information.
