Citroën Dispatched To The Movies For Wes Anderson With A Very French H Van

There’s a new film out where the star is a Citroën H van, and it’s by Wes Anderson too. Ok, I may have stretched it a little bit, but there’s no doubt that the commercial vehicle plays an enormous part.

This movie is a collection of stories from the last issue of an American magazine published in a fictitious French town in the 20th Century.

To do this accurately it was necessary to feature a range of classic and historic French cars. The Type H Van being the leading vehicle and the film features the Traction Avant too. Plenty of other Citroëns are featured in the streets of the town, time to go classic spotting. See if you can find the 2 CV, Ami 6, GS and of course DS.

Director Wes Anderson; “The visual base of the film, the costumes, the sets, everything… it’s all informed by research. Even though it’s a kind of confection and it’s sort of invented stuff with a fantasy element to it, it is basically all grounded by reference.”

Citroën played a big part in this visual base, colabborating with Anderson who visited the conservatoire, Citroëns private collection, to identify which models would suite the story best. The main choices being the Traction and Type H.

After the death of the editor of The French Dispatch, a team of writers gather to write his obituary in the fictional town of Ennui-sur-Blasé. the memories flow into four stories. one story, The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner, has the feel of classic french crime dramafrom the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

At one point real life turns into animation for a car chase involving a Citroën Traction Avant, which looks just like thos fantastic French graphic novels, which are still extremely popular today. The location for this scene was the comic book capitol of France, Angoulême.

Citroën are no stranger to the film industry, the S CV in James Bond’s for your eyes only in 1981, the DS in Back to the Future Part !! in 1989 and the animated Cars 2 where a DS and 2 CV kiss above the Seine.

This is not the first time that Wes Anderson has used Citroëns in his films. In 2004, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, he featured Citroën twice. Once with the yellow Mehari used for driving around the island and the Hotel Citroën where Professor Zissou’s crew rescue the hostages.

Both written and directed by Wes Anderson, the film has the fantastic classic car cast, but also features Bill Murray, Tilda Swinson, Benico del Toro, Willem Dafoe and Anjelica Huston.

There isn’t much that tempts me to go to the cinema, but this might just be it. Out now it might be a nice way to spend 1 hour 47 minutes.

Thanks to Citroën for the use of the images.
