Lawrence Of Arabia Had One, 1938 Brough Superior SS100 At Auction

The Brough Superior is one of those most desirable of all vehicles ever produced and it would have been even if it wasn’t for Lawrence of Arabia. The household name brought the safe fate to the small motorcycle manufacturer due to his obsession with the marque and sadly his death whilst riding one. One that isn’t too dissimilar to the one we have here for sale.

Lawrence’s Brough was a 1932 compared to this 1938, so there is a little bit of subtle evolution, but seeing as all Brough’s were built to the owner’s specification it’s unlikely to find two exactly the same. And with only 3048 Broughs built across all the models, finding two together isn’t exactly common either. Though it has happened before, and at auction too.

The SS100 was the fastest thing on the road for a while too. In 1939 one set a new record of 169 mph by Eric Fernihough, who sadly died at 180 trying to break his record. There was certainly more in the bike.

This SS100 was delivered new to Layton’s of oxford on the 15th of October 1938 and first registered to Kings Motors of Oxford.

The bike has all the correct frame, engine and gearbox numbers and have been confirmed by the Brough Superior Owners Club.

The early history is unknown until it was purchased by club member Mike Holben in the 1950s.

The Brough is in very good condition, its previous restoration being done to a good standard and is still very respectable.

There is a copy of the works record card amongst the paperwork and a continuation RF60 logbook from 1968.

And it was this SS100 that was used at the Moto GP Live programme when the reborn Brough Superior SS100 company was launched.

Offered for sale at the upcoming H&H Classics auction on Wednesday 27th October at the National Motorcycle Museum, England with an estimate of £180,000 to £200,000.

Thanks to H&H for the images.
