1977 VW Beetle 1303 LS Cabriolet Bought New By Roger Daltrey Of The Who Going To Auction
If you’re a fan of Roger Daltrey CBE and The Who then you’re in luck as you could buy the VW Beetle 1303 LS Cabriolet that he bought from new and owned for 30 years.
This 1977 Beetle was built to UK specification and driven by the singer and founder of the legendary rock band until 2005. There is a signed letter from Daltrey confirming ownership of the car in the history file. There is also a Volkswagen Museum Certificate confirming the specification and a build date of the 27th of January 1977. The UK specification and delivery is also confirmed and the original colour of Viper Green Metallic with a Pale Sand Hood.
Since 2005 the car has been well maintained and has seen regular servicing and in 2014 was subjected to a full bare metal respray. The Cibie Oscar driving lights that were fitted during Daltrey’s ownership are still present, but the interior has been retrimmed in beige leather.
Unfortunately, during the servicing of the car during Daltrey’s ownership the service book was lost, it was the last but one service. The service history is confirmed in the signed letter, but the original book pouch is present and so is a period owner’s manual. There are some old tax discs, V5s and a 2005 newspaper article from when the car was sold.
The seller is said to be a big fan of The Who bought the car in 2019 and has spent over £10,000 of the car to return it to its original specification.
“The car is now as near to as it was when it left the factory as I can get it; it’s in great nick, not Concours but very good.”
The car could well be worth the estimate of £28,000 – £34,000, even without the rock royalty provenance.
Going to auction on the 27th August 2022, see Silverstone Auctions for more information on viewing, or even bidding.
