Record Prices For Lamborghini Miura SV & Countach LP 400 Periscopo At RM Sotheby Paris Sale

A Lamborghini Countach LP 400 and a Miura SV make record prices at the RM Sotheby Paris sale.

The auction house sold the two Lamborghini models on the 13 February 2021. A 1971 Miura SV chassis number #4840 and a 1977 Countach LP 400 chassis #1120262.

Both cars have had major work over their lifetimes, mechanical and aesthetic changes being made. Lamborghini’s Polo Storico had been tasked with bringing the cars back to the correct condition.

“This is a pleasing but not surprising result, since it confirms a clear trend,” says Paolo Gabrielli, Head of Aftersales at Automobili Lamborghini, which oversees the Polo Storico. Historical Lamborghinis are of increasing interest to the world’s leading collectors, who are looking for the utmost respect for originality in their cars. The Polo Storico restoration programme, alongside supporting top independent specialists through the provision of advice, documents and original spare parts, makes it possible to obtain restorations of the highest level and quality, which are appreciated by collectors and, consequently, by the market.”

Lamborghini Countach LP 400 Periscopo

The Lamborghini Countach LP 400 Periscopo from the sale is the ex Rod Stewart car that he bought new in June 1977. Originally a right hand drive car that he shipped to LA from Australia when he emigrated very shortly after purchase.

To make the most of the Californian sunshine he had importer Al Mardikian convert the car into a roadster. The roof was cut off and a removable piece was fabricated. At the same time the car was converted to left hand drive. It also had the larger tele dial style wheels and wide arches fitted.

Thankfully the car has been restored to it’s original state, though it has remained in left hand drive. The early Campagnolo alloy wheels have been fitted and the Periscopo roof has returned.

I first saw this car at Retromobile 2010 and was impressed as I had never seen a ‘Targa’ style Countach as it was unique. But the restored version is much nicer. There’s something striking about the original, clean, lines enhancing the wedge shape.

I did see the car again at Retromobile 2020 on the Artcurial Auctions stand post restoration. It didn’t make the reserve so didn’t attract bids between the €800,000 to €1,200,000 guide back then.

This time it did sell and made a huge €775,000 in the auction.

Lamborghini Miura SV

The Lamborghini Miura SV is one of only 150 cars produced. This is another car that had seen extensive changes to the body and also the mechanicals being converted to Jota type and then being restored back.

The Miura sold for €2.4 million (€2,423,750), the second highest value ever for a Miura SV. The highest one was sold by Gooding & Co. in London in the September of 2020.

The Miura SV was certified by Polo Storico, one of the services provided by the factory. Lamborghini Polo Storico was formed in 2015 is Automobili Lamborghini department responsible for preserving the heritage of the Sant ‘Agata Bolognese company.

Restoration and certification of all Lamborghini cars produced until 2001 are some of the tasks undertaken by Polo Storico. They’re also responsible for the production of spare parts for all vintage Lamborghinis. Some 200 new parts are introduced each year. Polo Storico also preserve and manage the archive of classic Lamborghinis for the factory.

Thanks to Lamborghini for the images.
