Lego Audi Sport Quattro S1, 1985 World Rally Championship

Lego have released a 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 in their Speed Champions collection. Lego have released a number of interesting cars in this range, but this one really looks right. The angular lines of the Sport Quattro really fitting well with the block construction of a Lego kit. Jalopy had to investigate and build one.

With many of us stuck indoors at the moment, it seemed like a good idea to try it out.

The Audi Quattro has been a favourite rally car of mine and many others. Redefining a whole area of motorsport, they even developed a new category Group B around them. I’m convinced the Group B category was created to give other manufacturers a chance to compete with low volume production specials. After all, the Quattro, even in shortened Sport Quattro form was a road car. A voulme production road car. Apparently this made them comfortable and ride comparatively well compared to the others.

Building an Audi Sport Quattro S1

Inside the box there are bags containing the 250 pieces that are needed to build the car. Of course there are always a few spare and a book of instructions.

The build is quite simple and relatively easy to do. The instuctions are clear and you are unlikely to make any mistakes. The stickers are small and of course fiddly. They aren’t easy to reposition if they aren’t in the right place first time.

The five spoke wheels have the look of the car in tarmac trim, which suits the nice rubber treaded tyres. These are of course unlike the road going car’s Ronal alloys, which Audi used variant of throughout the range. There are some multi spoked types, if you prefer. But, if you look at period footage the Audi often had the five spokes.

Many of the parts are generic Lego with very little appearing to be special for the Quattro. Though there are some vehicle specific parts, such as the bonnet, roof, screen and wheelarches. Thanks to the design of the car the Lego set pieces work really well. It won’t take too long to build but it really looks fantastic when done.

Completed the car measures around 16cm long

Have a look at the amusing build video if you aren’t convinced already.

If Lego can release more 1970s and 1980s rally icons I think I’d buy more of them. Can you imagine a Lancia Delta Integrale or even a Mk2 Ford Escort. I even think a Lotus Sunbeam would work well too.

Of course you could head out and buy one, but Amazon have them in stock for either £18 or $20 and deliver.
