£6,900 For A Sign! Intersting Automobilia With An Eye Opening High Price

How much did that sign just sell for…. £6,900! Automobilia might just be an interesting relic from the past, but it can be valuable, and some will sell at a high price. Perhaps this needs some investigation.

H&H Classics have looked back over the last year and some of the successes. Something really stood out to me and that was the value of promotional or advertising material. I have always loved these old style period pieces as not only are they functional, but they also look great.

So, what is it that makes a sign for an Insurance company I have never heard of worth £6,900? The Edwardian race car moving fast on the sign dates it to some time ago. There can’t be many motorists from that period who are still around to buy it. I get it, I’d love an old petrol pump or some period signs for the dream garage or even the living room.

It turns out that the British Dominion Marine Insurance Company was formed in 1906. It acquired Eagle Star, Sceptre and The Star and eventually renaming to Eagle Star who I do remember. It is now part of Zurich and disappeared in 1999.

The fact that something like this has survived is amazing, and it was in pretty decent condition too.

Classic cars might be the investment to have. But with things like these you can hang them inside on your wall at very little risk and no more costs. The value in some of them is as much as a nice classic car of course.

Next up I really liked the Challenge Motor Oil can. A disposable item once you’ve used the contents. This one however was still full, making it more valuable.

New in box I guess would be the description. It came with a restored petrol can, but this unrestored oil container looks like something you’d want to display.

Modern ones just don’t have that appeal. This piece of automobilia sold for an equally amazing high price of £2,760.

If things of a more practical nature are your thing how about a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 46 piece toolkit?

With mostly original tools and some remanufactured pieces in a nice leather roll. Several spanners, a grease gun, a Dunlop tyre lever. Wheel spanners, box spanners, screwdrivers, pliers and more. Probably most things you’d need to maintain your car on a journey. Not something anyone needs to do these days.

Now this is likely to be paired up with a car, but there are people who collect these things, and someone was prepared to pay £4,830 to do so.

Lastly an original French film poster for the Classic 1971 Steve McQueen film Le Mans. I’d like this on my wall, if I had a big enough home for it. The model provided for an indication of the size and did not form part of the sale…

This has to be my favourite of all motoring related films. Le Mans in that period was still dangerous but so fast without any of the chicanes to hold them back. This is of course a very rare item. Looks in really nice condition too and has not faded.

Set in a nice wooden frame this linen backed poster measures 63 inches high and 47 inches wide. Sold for a bargain £2,990.

So, if you have a loved one complaining about your hoarding or cleptomania, point them in the direction of an automobilia auction.

You can sell your collection in many years to come and retire very comfortably off the proceeds. Or sit in isolation enjoying it…
