Alfa Romeo is 110 years old this month. The 24 June 1910 marks the date when the first A.L.F.A., the 24 HP, was introduced.
This year Alfa managed to get the museum in Arese open to celebrate this rather impressive milestone. Access to areas of the museum that are normally off limits are now available. This contains a further 150 cars, trophies, artwork and engines. Normally known as storage and archive.
There is a new section, “Alfa Romeo in Uniform”. A section of the museum dedicated to cars of the Carabinieri. The national police force of Italy.
The museum, located in Arne on the outskirts of Milan, is the focus of this anniversary. Over 200 vehicles are inside the museum. 18 themed sections covering the earliest cars to all the formula racers.
Alfa Romeo was established in Milan, Italy, on June 24, 1910. A group of entrepreneurs and businessmen bought Società Italiana Automobili Darracq. Then the Italian branch of the French car maker, and its Portello workshops. With this they formed A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili – “Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company”).
A.L.F.A wanted to develop a completely new model. In order to do that they hired Giuseppe Merosi. Giuseppe who was a top-class engineer specialising in racing engines. Under his leadership, A.L.F.A developed the 24 HP, which in it’s day was a sort of sports sallon. Kind of an Alfa tradition.
