Delahaye Le Mans 135 S Competition Court Buzz II At Auction

Bonhams have secured a rare ex Le Mans 1936 Delahaye 135 S Compétition Court known as Buzz II for their upcoming Monaco sale. The Les Grandes Marques à Monaco sale returns on April 23, 2021 to coincide with the Monaco Historic Grand Prix.

The car is known for success in the 1930s and the 135 S is one of the greatest sports racing cars of the pre-war era. The French marque had great success, a lot of it was due to the Irish American heiress Lucy Schell. Herself a former racing driver, Schell became the first female motorsport team owner. Her finest victory came in in the 1938 Pau Grand Prix with her semi-works Delahaye team beating the dominant Mercedes factory effort.

Bonhams sold Schell the 135 S two years earlier, which had made its track debut in 1936 at the Three Hours of Marseille endurance race while part of Écurie Bleu. The sky blue paintwork representing the French national colour and the noise of the engine producing a muffled buzzing noise earned the car the nickname Blue Buzz.

This car, Blue Buzz II, competed in many pre-war Grand Prix races. Donington, Pau, Commiges, and endurance races such as the Belfast Tourist-Trophy. The car’s greatest challenge was the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1939. In that year the car was rebodied in a more aerodynamic style by coachbuilders Chappes Frères.

After two later face lifts the 135 S is now being offered with the bodywork in the style of the Chappes Frères bodyshell. The original period running gear is present and the original chassis is present. Something considered to be a rarity in a car from this period.

Of course, the Delahaye 135 S is eligible for the Le Mans Classic and would make a lovely entrant if you are in the position to afford it.

The estimate for the Delahave is € 800,000 – 1,100,000, you can register for the auction on Bonhams Website.

Thanks to Bonhams for the images. I hope to see the car at the next Le Mans Classic.
