Audi 100 / 5000 Avant C3 1983 -1988

Audi launched the third generation 100 Avant C3 in March 1983 based on the Audi 100 C3 saloon of the previous year. The station wagon of the range was something between the two, not quite like the liftback of the previous generation. But certainly not a conventional estate car.

By the end of 1991 Audi had built over 110,000 examples of the Avant.

It offered a large luggage compartment but was still aerodynamic. The drag coefficient of 0.34 made it the most aerodynamic estate car in the world at the time.

All driveline options, engines and gearboxes were available. Also the procon-ten system too.

Available in front wheel drive and all wheel drive quattro models with a range of four cylinder and five cylinder petrol engines. A Diesel and Turbo Diesel engines were available in fwd models only.

Four and five speed manuals and three or four speed automatic transmissions were available.

The Audi 5000 was the North American market model covering both the 100 and the Audi 200. The engine range overlapped with the 200 turbocharged fives and the 100’s normally aspirated units.

Audi 100 / 5000 Avant C3 1989 -1991

January 1988 saw the facelifted version of the Audi 100 introduced. It was only a subtle facelift, the biggest external change being flush fitting doorhandles.

The very first Audi model to wear a TDI badge was a 100 C3. The new 2.5 litre, 5 cylinder, Turbo Diesel engine found its way into the C3 just before it was replaced by the C4 in December 1990.
